U16 Ladies Football Victorious in League play-off V St Finbarrs
Our U16s came out victorious in their league play-off after a pulsating battle with St Finbarrs this evening in Manning Park. St Finbarrs opened the scoring with an early goal before Elly Murphy pointed for Passage and then went ahead thanks to a Shannon Ryan goal; Shannon marking her return from injury with a great score. Passage pulled ahead and led for much of the first half, extending their lead to 9 points before the Barrs hit a purple patch and reduced the deficit to 2 points at half time; 3-6 to 3-4 in Passage’s favour.
The second half proved much tighter with the lead changing hands a number of times; both sides not giving an inch in a great physical battle. Passage took the lead by a single point in the final minutes and the defence stood resolute against the waves of St Finbarr’s attempts to equalise and bring the game to extra time. A fantastic result in front of a great home crowd. Final score Passage 3-11 St Finbarr’s 5-4. The girls now face Macroom in the league semi-final next week
Passage team: S. O’Keeffe, K. Farrell, T. Hanlon, I. O’Brien, R. Browne, S. Moynihan, C. Brady, E. Murphy (1-3), R. Killen, S. Ryan (1-1), L. Coughlan (0-1), S. O’Mahony (0-6), A. Keane, C. James (1-0), E. O’Flynn, K. Maxwell, L. Kelly, R. Hanlon, C. Walsh
Passage U12s made it a hat trick of wins in the league with a hard fought win against a tough Kildorrery team played in ideal conditions in Manning Park on Friday evening.
The Passage girls made all the early running but were finding scores hard to come by due to some dogged Kildorrery defending. Róisín Hanlon got the first goal of the game in the 17th minute to eventually get Passage up and running.
Kildorrery up the ante to try and get back in the game but the backs defended resolutely and Maggie Murphy and team captain Emily Collier, who continued the great form she showed last week, relieved the pressure with some long clearances.
Half time score Passage 1-0 Kildorrery 0-0.
The 2nd half continued in the same vein with the backs winning their individual battles, midfield working hard to keep the ball moving into the forwards and the forwards were making some great chances but the Kildorrery goalkeeper was in great form and made some good saves. Eventually in the 19th minute of the half Eva Barry got the final touch to finish to the net and the score was now starting to reflect the game. 3 minutes later the outstanding Sarah Hendrick flashed a great shot to the net from 20 meters to put the result beyond doubt and leave the final score Passage 3-0 Kildorrery 0-0.
Kerri Daly was again safe as houses in the goal and her long puckouts are a serious weapon. The backs were magnificent all through and snuffed out any danger. The midfield of Sarah, Aoife and Keelin covered every blade of grass and the forwards worked tigererishly and with a bit more luck could have had a few more scores. Well done to all 19 players who are improving week to week. Player of the match this week was undoubtedly Sarah Hendrick who was outstanding all through and her goal was just reward for her efforts.
Our U11 footballers took part in the John Kerins Tournament on Saturday morning in glorious sunshine in Manning Park. The lads played 3 games v Shamrocks, Ballygarvan and Crosshaven. They played some excellent football throughout the competition and although did not qualify for the finals next month the lads can hold their heads up high. Thanks to all who gave the lads great support, to those who provided sandwiches and cakes, to those on traffic management and to Johnno for operating the clubhouse for supporters to avail of teas and coffees. Thanks to the organisers of the tournament and officials for reffing the matches. Best of luck to Crosshaven and Shamrocks in the finals next month.

Passage U15 Hurling Team win clubs first ever County Feile
Well done to our U15 Hurling team on winning the clubs first ever County Feile for Passage with wins over St Kevin’s in the semi final and Lisgoold in an epic final.
The team put on a masterful display of skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship, taking the top prize in this fiercely contested tournament for the very first time. The young players played their hearts out in every game, and every player was magnificent in their own right. Their sheer determination and passion for the game was apparent on the field, and their commitment was second to none.
These young players are truly heroes and warriors, much like Cuchulainn from Irish folklore. They have demonstrated that with hard work, dedication, and teamwork, anything is achievable. The team has brought great pride and joy to their families and community, and their achievement will inspire generations of hurlers to come. It is a remarkable achievement, and they should be proud of themselves.
On behalf of the entire club and Passage community, we congratulate you on your incredible victory. Player Performance:
David O’Connor- it was a testament to the brilliant Passage outfield performances that David saw little action in the group stage on Saturday. This all changed for the semi-final as the young U-13 keeper had to pull off some wonderful saves to keep Passage in the game. On three occasions he managed to stop three point-blank shots before having to go off with an injured hand. One save in the second half stopped St.Kevins taking the lead and the resulting clearance ended up with Sean Coughlan scoring a great goal. This was the turning moment of the game. Unfortunately, the injury ruled him out for the final.
Aidan O’Connor – Aidan was very consistent throughout all the games not giving any of his opponents a minute’s peace. He was hooking, blocking, and playing tough no-nonsense hurling throughout. Aidan who plays in midfield for the U-14 team can be proud of his displays in the corner. None of the players he was marking scored over the five games. On several occasions Aidan managed to get in a last gasp block, and he cleared numerous balls throughout the games.
Cian Barry – Cian one of the more experienced players on the team bossed the edge of the square in the first 3 matches on Saturday in the group stage, giving a commanding performance throughout. For the semi-final, he came up against a very good full forward. Cian didn’t flinch edging a fierce battle, with the full forward in the end being moved out the field. For the final Cian showed his versatility by moving out the field in a tactical switch. He played his part in the historic win working hard around the half-back line and getting in some tremendous blocks when the game was in the melting pot. One of so many heroes during the tournament.
Ruben Ring – Ruben another U-14 player is a no-nonsense very physical cornerback who has slotted into the team this year. He is very effective in the corner not giving any of his opponents any scoring chances. He had some great battles over the 5 games and can be proud of his efforts. A coaches dream whatever job he’s given is carried out without any fuss.
Dermot Buckley – Bucks had a tremendous tournament playing his normal physical style winning all his individual battles. Unfortunately, he took a bad bang to the head in the final which forced him to come off. Up to this point, he was flying and thankfully the injury isn’t too serious, and he will be back for the battles ahead next month.
Stephen Lyons – Stevie brings a commanding physical presence to the centre-back spot and despite not playing much hurling this year he slotted in effortlessly. He was in the battle of all battles in the final against the Lisggold Cork full forward who had scored 5 goals in the semi-final. Stevie stood tall and especially in the second half he gave a heroic display which helped Passage lay the foundations for victory.
Oisin O’Sullivan – The quiet man who does his talking on the pitch. Part of an excellent half back line that hurled splendidly all weekend. Took a bad belt on the shin in the final yet stood up and was counted when it was backs to the wall especially in the final. Scored a great point in the Grenagh match and overall was on top of his game throughout the tournament.
Calum Griffin – One of the top performers throughout and ran himself to a standstill in every game. Won all his midfield battles and chipped in with 2-7 over the 5 games. Calum also has a strong physical presence, and he has been unplayable over the last few weeks. He was man of the match against St.Catherines in a challenge game two weeks ago and continued this form over the weekend. He is currently hurling with the Cork U-15 Development Squad, and this seems to have added to his confidence which is great to see.
Philip Heavey – U-14 star player Philip was the second man in the dream midfield partnership with Calum. Philip scored 2-11 throughout the tournament and like Calum he has been playing great hurling over the last few weeks. He continued this great form over the 5 games and can be proud of his great performances. Philip is currently hurling with the U-14 Cork Development Squad and reports are coming back that he is not out of place amongst the elite.
Ben Horgan – Ben was in the thick of action in every game going into every tackle without fear for his own safety. Brave as a lion he tackled, blocked and broke several balls for centre forward Sean Coughlan. Ben scored 2 points over the 5 games and he can be pleased with his performances throughout.
Sean Coughlan – Sean scored 5-26 over the 5 games and it’s a testament to what a great player he is when no one was shocked. Sean has been breaking scoring records for the last few years and will do for years to come. He is another player on the Cork U15 Development squad and has a great future ahead of him. When the opposition improved and were stronger on the Monday Sean raised his game. He was the man in the final winning the shootout with the Lisgoold’s star player.
Alex Meagher – The final player in this outstanding half forward line, Alex ran himself into the ground and went on several solo runs which created scores for other players. He was up and down the line putting his man in every game under pressure. They didn’t get a clean puck in with all the blocking and hooking Alex put in. Like Ben on the other side Alex worked himself to a standstill and hurled magnificently throughout all the games.
Sean O’Regan – Corner forward Sean was always making himself available in the corner and won several balls sent in towards him. He scored 2 great points and made a lot of scores for players by laying off passes when he could have gone for scores himself. He stood up to be counted for the Final when he went into goal and helped his team mates secure the clubs first Feile title.
Zac Hanlon – Captain fantastic Zac was unplayable over the weekend scoring 7 goals and 6 points. Zac has developed into a truly great full forward and it won’t be long going on this form before he will be joining his teammate’s on the Cork panel. All the full backs were left scratching their heads on how to stop him. Ball after ball he won and they either ended up as a score or a free going his way. Zac has thrived being captain and he will always have great memories of lifting the trophy after the final finished.
Eoghan O’Byrne – U14 player Eoghan scored the first goal of the tournament for Passage in the first few minutes of the first game against Grenagh. It was a very important score as it settled Passage down immediately and laid the foundation for the remaining games. Eoghan played great hurling throughput and was unlucky to not have scored more goals with two efforts going inches wide in the other games. First cousin to captain Zac he can be proud of his performances.
Brian Griffin – Brian is one of the 3 U-13 players on the panel and started some of the games over the weekend. He is one of the star men in his own age group and will be togging out for Cork in the Primary Games next Sat night at half time of the Cork Tipp game. Brian scored a point in the Grenagh match and had two efforts in the final that the Lisgoold keeper somehow managed to save. A bright future lies ahead for this young man.
Sean Cash – Sean played great hurling throughout the weekend when called into the backline. He has been playing very well with the U-14 Hurlers this season and brought this form into the Feile games. He came in for Bucks in the final and slotted straight in. He cleared several balls in the epic second half when the trophy was up for grabs. We don’t just have Cork Hurling stars on team Sean and Cian Barry are currently training with the Cork U14 & U15 Football Development Squads.
Mark Barry – U-14 player and younger brother to full back Cian, Mark has settled into his new defensive role very well this season. His form with the U14 team has been very good and like most of his team mates he brought his A game to the Feile. He played very well when called upon in all the games and he can be proud of his performances. He defended excellently throughout and used his speed to win several balls.
Daniel Collier- Another one of the U-13 stars Daniel played excellent hurling when called on over the 5 games. Scored a great individual point in the Vincent’s game. Like Brian he has a great future ahead and I wouldn’t back against them winning another Feile in the coming two years.
Corey Browne – U-14 player Corey Browne played his part in capturing this historic first ever trophy for Passage. He played a part in all the games and scored a great goal against St. Vincent’s in the group games. He worked hard throughout and was unlucky with two other goal chances in the Vincent’s game.
Cian Mc Donald – Unfortunately missed the group stages but took his opportunity in the final scoring a great poachers goal to give Passage the lead in the first half when it was real backs to the wall. Played well for the remainder of the game and played an important part in this great victory.
Morgan Kelleher – Arrived with 10 minutes left on the clock and the game delicately poised. Morgan was put straight into battle and his presence seemed to lift the whole team. He got stuck straight in and his physical presence was crucial in the remaining few minutes.
Shane Whyte – Special mention to star player Shane Whyte who was injured for the tournament. Hopefully Shane’s injury will clear up soon and he can get back hurling as quicky as possible.
On Friday evening Passage U12s made the short journey to Rathcormac to take on Bride Rovers in the second round of the U12 camogie league. Bride Rovers opened the scoring with a goal after 16 minutes and followed up with a point 3 minutes later and were starting to build some momentum with Passage struggling briefly to get on the ball. The backs were working extremely hard at this point and did brilliantly to stop Bride Rovers from adding to their score. Róisín then scored a great point to finally get Passage on the board after 22 minutes.
Half time: Bride Rovers 1-1 Passage 0-1.
Passage were quicker out of the traps in the second half and were putting the Bride Rovers defence under great pressure. The pressure finally told and Eva Barry deservedly got the first goal after 5 minutes. A minute later Aisling Ní Shúilleabháin swept home another goal and Passage were now in front. Passage dominated the next 15 minutes but couldn’t add to the score with some goal-line clearances by Bride Rovers and narrow wides. At the other end the backs still weren’t giving the Bride Rovers forwards an inch and any ball that made it through was expertly dealt with by the captain on the night, Kerri. Bride Rovers finally got their only score of the half a point in the 2nd minute of added time. With points worth 2 there was now only the minimum between the teams, Passage 2-1 ( to Bride Rovers 1-2. Three more nervy minutes ensued but Passage held on for the win.
Another great team performance on a wet evening, especially in the second half with all 21 players getting game time and contributing to the performance.
A special mention must go to my player of the match, Emily Collier who was the stand-out player on the pitch in the second half.
Passage West’s u12 footballers played a very strong Kiltha Og tonight in Passage last night. With the Feile final being played on the main pitch, Kiltha started very strong scoring an early point only to be answered by a good point from Fionn O’Flaherty. Kiltha then scored a fortunate goal and added another point before Josh Hanna replied scoring a goal from a great shot. Kiltha Og answered by scoring a goal and a point before Robert Allen put his first score over the bar. Kiltha replied with another point before Passage worked the ball down the field where Zack Long scored a fine goal. Kiltha scored another point before Fionn scored his second point from a free kick. Kiltha finished the half by scoring the next three points, but another point by Zack gave Passage some hope. The half-finished Passage 2-4, Kiltha 3-8. The second half started with Passage a completely reinvigorated team, helped by Oisin Quigley scoring a goal in the first minute. Kiltha put the ball over the bar but then Passage went on a scoring frenzy, Fionn scored three points and Robert scored his second. Kiltha managed another point before Rory Walsh put the ball into the back of the net, followed shortly after by another goal from Fionn. Kiltha scored the next three points before Fionn scored the final score, a point from a free kick, with Passage coming out victorious. After a slow start in the first half, Passage never-give-up attitude was on full display. In goal, Jake Ahern made some great saves and marshalled his defence brilliantly, full backs Callum Carroll and Ben Devine fought doggedly for every ball that came their way. Halfbacks of Luke Meagher, Padraig O’Driscoll, and candidate for man of the match Cameron Lee were steadfast in intercepting the many fast-paced and skilled attacks. The midfield of Fionn O’Flaherty and Rory Walsh were tireless in covering every part of the pitch and winning some great ball and showing their great skills.
The half forwards, Tiernan Mccarthy, Robert Allen and Zack Long harassed and tormented the Kiltha defence and forwards Josh Hanna and Evan Clinton busted their guts trying to notch up the scores.
Subs Tommy Coakley, Charlie Cremin, and Lorcan Granby all came on and helped keep the pressure on Kiltha.
The game was played at a great speed and intensity, both sides giving all they had, not giving an inch yet played in an extremely fair and honest manner.
City Division Junior B Hurling League Final – 17th July 2022
Passage 0-18 Glen Rovers 1-11
Our Junior B Hurlers ended a 31 year wait for a trophy this morning in a sun drenched Ballinlough. Having lost 4 finals over the last 3 years the pressure was on to deliver a result and deliver they did. They went toe to toe with a gallant Glen Rovers side and finally got over the line scoring 3 late unanswered points.
Luke Hanlon raised the white flag with a well taken long range free in the first minute. The exchanges were tough in the opening minutes with every ball being contested like everyone’s life depended on it. Liam Power was fouled, and Luke made no mistake from the resulting free. From the puck out Josh Nolan won possession and sent a ball in to Scott Coughlan in the corner. Scott fired the sliotar over the shoulder out by the side line to increase the Passage lead to 3 points.
The Glen registered their first score of the game on the 4th minute with a well taken point from their left half forward. In the early stages the Passage full back line of Josh Shiels, Anto and Andrew O’Mahony were hurling great stuff clearing numerous balls. Linesman Billy O’Regan was thrown into the limelight after awarding a contentious line ball to Passage. From the line ball Conor Coughlan won the ball and was about to pull the trigger when the referee blew for over carrying. The Glen put over a free to narrow the Passage lead to 1 point on 9 minutes.
They took control of the game over the next 5 minutes scoring another 2 points to give them the lead for the first time of the game. Josh Nolan and Liam Power started to turn the screw on the Glen midfield partnership and Passage were soon level again when Conor Coughlan was fouled. Luke made no mistake firing over. Conor Coughlan was unlucky with a goal chance moments later. Both teams exchanged points in the next minute, the Passage point coming from a Luke Hanlon free.
Passage were now on top and points from centre back Kealan O’Flynn and Luke Hanlon gave them a 2-point lead coming up to half time. Somehow the wasn’t more with Luke and Jamie Mc Carthy hitting efforts narrowly wide. Liam Harrington the youngest player on the pitch had a great point disallowed for over carrying a harsh decision in my humble opinion. The Glen scored the last point of the half to leave the half time score Passage 0-7 Glen Rovers 0-6. At the restart with teams went hard at it. Tackles flying in, hooks and blocks and some heroic defending from the Passage backs. The half back line of Aidan Medley, Kealan and Thomas Harrington were hurling well and breaking up a lot of ball. Inside youngster Andrew O’Mahony was contender for man of the match. Josh Nolan from a pass from Alex Murphy and Luke Hanlon scored two points to extend the Passage lead.
The Glen made a few positional changes and were unlucky with a goal chance that was inches wide. The referee had to consult his umpires as it was suggested that the ball had gone through a hole in the netting. The Glen full forward made no mistake with the next chance that was created blasting an unstoppable shot to the back of Gary Tett’s net. The sides were level, and the Glen now raised their game. They quickly scored another point to give them the lead after 10 minutes.
Conor Coughlan quickly drew the team’s level again with a long-range effort. The Passage forwards Alex Murphy, Scott Coughlan and Jamie Mc Carthy were matching the Passage defence for hard work. Team Captain Dan Hanlon came on for Aidan Medley on the 15-minute mark. Medley had put in a great shift hurling himself to a standstill. Jamie Mc Carthy fired over a wonder score to regain the lead for Passage. The Glen quickly responded with two points one of which was a majestic effort over by the embankment side. Their lead could have been more only for another fine save from Gary Tett.
With 10 minutes left on the clock Luke levelled the scores with a long range free. He then scored a 65 and one from play to extend the Passage lead with only a few minutes left on the clock. The Glen responded with a point from their half forward and another from their centre forward to level the game. Luke restored the Passage lead with another well taken free. The referee was now playing injury time and it wasn’t great for the heart. The Glen were awarded a close in free and to the relief of the big Passage crowd watching the Glen forward somehow failed to score.
Passage realised they got out of jail and in the closing two minutes fired over 3 unanswered points. Jamie Mc the hero of the semi-final win against Douglas and Luke Hanlon with two were the scorers. The referee blew his whistle after 8 minutes extra time and Passage and finally ended the famine. Conor Harrington was given the privilege by Dan Hanlon to collect the trophy as he was captain on the previous losing teams in the last few yrs. A great sporting gesture by Dan.
Manager Niall Harrington said he was “Absolutely buzzing after that win. An amazing feeling walking out of Ballinlough with the cup this year instead of our heads hanging. A massive effort again today. Some battle in heat of a league final in Ballinlough but we fought right to the end, each to a man. That victory today was a total squad effort from everyone involved in their whole league campaign. That includes 25 togged out today and fellas that were injured or not able to make it today. We played 7 league games and only lost 2 narrowly. Each one a battle including semi-final against Douglas. Today’s victory was thanks to efforts of the 30 plus players that played over the whole league. Ye all played your part. Well done each and every one of you. Bring on the championship “
Team: Gary Tett, Andrew O’Mahony, Anthony Kidney, Josh Shiels, Aidan Medley, Kealan O’Flynn)0-1), Thomas Harrington, Josh Nolan (0-1), Liam Power, Jamie Mc Carthy (0-2), Alex Murphy, Liam Harrington, Scott Coughlan (0-1), Luke Hanlon ( 0-12), Conor Coughlan (0-1).
All roads headed to Minane Bridge last night for the U-14 Football Championship Final against Tracton. In sweltering 22 degree heat the stage was set for the Passage lads to win an historic championship double. The dressing room was rocking before the game as the management team psyched the boys up. The Tracton mentors were shouting “Effort is King” before the throw in and it’s fair to say it was the Passage lads who listened.
Morgan Kelleher won the ball from the throw in and for the rest of the game he was majestic in midfield. Corner forward Mark Barry scored the first point of the game in the first minute from a pass from Oisin O’Sullivan who was making his comeback from injury. From the kickout Tracton worked the ball up the pitch and were almost in for a goal chance only for an important interception by Captain Fantastic Cian Barry. This was the first sign that the Passage back line were going to come out on top. The six backs for the rest of the night cleared ball after ball laying the platform for the Passage forwards to excel. The first goal of the game came from the boot of Philip Heavey after a great solo run from centre back Calum Griffin opened up the Tracton defence.
A minute later Calum was again the provider for the second goal for Passage. Another solo run and defence splitting pass found full forward Zac Hanlon in space. There is always only going to be one outcome when Zac is clear, and he shot an unstoppable effort to the top of the net. It was the dream start 7 points up after 5 minutes. Tracton tried to regroup but with Stephen Lyons and Morgan dominating midfield they couldn’t get past the halfway line. When they did manage to get the ball in corner backs Aidan O’Connor and Sean O’Regan broke their hearts in the early stages winning their personal duels. Sean Coughlan and Shane Whyte raised two more green flags within a minute before Tracton scored their first point of the game on 12 minutes.
The man from Syria Alaa Al Steif came thundering into the game at half back. He won two balls and then set up Zac for his second goal of the game. With the weather so hot the referee decided to call a water break for the players. From the restart Alex Maher pointed after great work from Oisin O’Sullivan. Tracton regrouped and had a period of being camped in the Passage half. They converted a free for their second point of the game. Heroic defending by Alaa , Sean O’Regan and a great save from goalkeeper young David O’Connor sucked the life out of the Tracton forwards.
Sean Coughlan lifted the siege with a shot that hit the cross bar and bounced on the line or was it over the line? The referee ruled out the goal there would probably have been more drama if the score line was closer. England famously won the FA Cup in 1966 with a similar effort. Sean dusted himself down and sent over two quick points to increase the boys in green lead. Morgan Kelleher then scored a great long-range point after being set up by Mark Barry. The next passage of play saw Sean O’Regan clear the ball to Oisin O’Sullivan. Oisin shot was saved by the Tracton keeper, but the rebound came to Zac Hanlon who buried it for his third goal of the evening. Tracton attacked from the kick out and worked the ball into their full forward. His point-blank shot was saved by goalkeeper David O’Connor.
The rebound was again saved by David before the third Tracton goal attempt was cleared off the line by Aidan O’Connor. Philip Heavey wrapped up the scoring with a well worked point with the last kick of the half. The half time score was Passage 6-6 Tracton 0-2. On the resumption Passage midfield pairing of Stephen Lyons and Morgan Kelleher continued their fine form. Stephen won the throw in, and Passage were up and running again. A high ball in was caught by David O’Connor and his pass found Shane Whyte on the half back line. Shane went on a solo run and sent a long ball into Sean Coughlan who buried it to the back of the net.
Jack Mc Carthy was sprung from the bench, and he immediately settled in sending a long ball in to Alex Maher. Alex gave a great pass to Sean Coughlan who was blown up for over carrying when he was through for another goal. Tracton scored two quick points before Philip Heavey scored another point after another great solo run by Shane Whyte. Calum Griffin was dominating at centre back and his passing vision was putting Tracton under savage pressure. The next Tracton attack ended with David O’Connor catching a high ball in around the square. Passage emptied the bench with Sean Cash, Thomas Flaherty and Eoghan O’Bryne coming on and playing their part in this great victory.
Sean Cash first piece of action had him producing an excellent block down and this is an art that he has obviously learned while training with the Cork U-13 Development squad. He was busy winning all the balls that came his way and working hard for the remainder of the game. In the next play Eoghan O’Bryne won a 45 that Sean Coughlan converted from the ground. Another save from goalkeeper David O’Connor was cleared down the field and Sean Coughlan was again blown up for over carrying after he blasted the ball to the back of the net. Sean immediately won the ball and scored a long-range point from the resulting free out.
Tracton replied with their first goal of the game a well worked move through the Passage defence. It was “shuffling” at its best. They quickly added another 2 points. Thomas O’Flaherty who had been very unlucky with two goal chances earlier scored a point after great work from Morgan Kelleher and Philip Heavey. Sean Cash and Eoghan O’Bryne combined to force the Tracton half back to fumble the ball and it rebounded to Alaa who went on a solo run. His pass found Sean Coughlan who made no mistake scoring goal number 8 on the night. Tracton worked the ball down the field and a high ball in was comfortably collected by David O’Connor in goals and his pass out to Shane Whyte was the final piece of action on an historic night for the Passage club.

Manning Park crowd treated to masterclass as U14 hurlers win championship
The large crowd present were treated to a master class from this young team last night in Manning Park. If Carlsberg did winning finals this was the game. Passage having won the toss elected to play against the wind in the first half. From the throw in Passage midfielder Shane Whyte set the tone for the rest of the game by winning the ball and scoring a great point following a solo run. Shane and midfield partner Calum Griffin ran the show for the rest of the night dominating every Ballinhassig partnership they came up against. Captain Sean Coughlan the Harry Potter of hurling scored a bullet of a goal almost immediately afterwards and Passage were up and going.
The work rate on show throughout was amazing to watch. The hooking, blocking, and striking was a testament to the coaching these players are receiving. The Ballinhassig centre forward replied with a long-range point having won the ball from the puck out. Full back Cian Barry scored Passage’s second goal in a well worked move. Young Brian Griffin one of 4 under twelve players playing on the night won a great ball surrounded by several Ballinhassig players. He managed to get the ball into Zac Hanlon who gave a splendid pass to Cian who finished to the back of the net. Sean Coughlan popped over a free a few minutes later to give Passage a commanding lead after 10 minutes. Over the next few minutes Ballinhassig threw everything at the Passage defence but couldn’t find a way through.
Cork had the man from Fiji Sean Og, Passage have their own star from Syria Alaa. He played a great game at corner back clearing one ball off the line in a goalmouth scramble. This kid only picked up a Hurley in March and he can be proud of his display on this big occasion. Alongside him Full back Cian Barry and another one of the U12 contingent David O’Connor cleared everything that came their way. After the off the line clearance by Alaa the Ballinhassig centre forward was blown up for over carrying after being cornered in by Dermot “Bucks” Buckley and David O’Connor. The two lads gave him no space to go and sent the signal out there was only going to be one winner. From the free out Sean Coughlan using his explosive speed won the ball and sent over another long-range point.
For the next few minutes both teams were battling hard and the sliothar was travelling up and down the field before the game exploded back into life. Within a minute both teams had raised the green flag, the Passage goal scored by the excellent Zac Hanlon goal poacher supreme. Shane Whyte scored another goal, and it really was champagne hurling at this stage. Youngest player on the pitch Fionn O’Flaherty was hooking and blocking like a senior hurler, Forward Mark Barry and Aidan O’Connor were winning their personal duels. Aidan was up and down his side of the pitch non stop working. Mark also was unlucky with two goal efforts, and he made several goal chances in the first half in particular.
Ballinhassig came back into the game and had a goal chance cleared by Alaa and from the clearance their centre forward fired over a point leaving the score 4-3 to 1-2 with 20 minutes gone. Ballinhassig won the puck out which resulted in another scramble around the box. David O’Connor won the ruck passed to Shane Whyte who drove the ball down the field towards Sean Coughlan. Despite being surrounded by 4 Ballinhassig players he managed to win the ball and drive the ball over the bar. Cian Barry batted out the ball from the puck out and another Shane and Sean combination resulted in another point for the boys in green. Sean and the Ballinhassig centre forward exchanged another brace of points before Zac pounced for his second goal.
Ballinhassig responded with a long range free their last score of the half. Morgan Kelleher was having a great game at centre back and as the game progressed the better, he became. Philip Heavey alongside him was hurling confidently and nothing was passing Bucks on the other wing. Callum Grif was sweeping up a large amount of ball and Ballinhassig just had no answer to the hurling Passage were producing. Mark Barry sent a great ball into the square and Sean Coughlan pulled on it sending it over the ball for another Passage point. Shane Whyte was fouled after winning the puck out and Sean Coughlan dispatched the free over the bar. The game flowed end to end again before Zac Hanlon and Sean Coughlan both pointed to bring the first half to an end. The half time score was Passage 5-10 Ballinhassig 1-4.
The Passage team were cheered on by the locals as they went into the dressing room for their half time talk. Passage made no changes to the team for the start of the second half. Passage were again first out of the starting blocks and Callum Griffin raised the first white flag of the half after great pass from his brother Brian. From the puck out Sean Coughlan went on a run and fired an unstoppable shot to the back of the net. Philip Heavey fired over another point before Ballinhassig replied with a long-range effort. David O’Connor won a high ball over by the Avondale side and drove a high ball in on top of Zac Hanlon. Zac plucked the ball out of the sky turned and buried his third of the night to the back of the net.
Passage now emptied the bench with Sean Cash, Eoghan O’Bryne and another U-12 fledging Daniel Collier coming on. The three lads immediately settled in with Sean clearing a ball almost immediately and both Eoghan and Daniel having goal chances. Dermot Buckley continued his good form with a lovely pass to Callum who fired over another point for Passage. Brother Brian fired over his own point much to the delight of the crowd. Sean O’Regan who hadn’t much to do up to this point showed his class over the next few minutes making one great save and controlling 3 high dangerous balls into the square.
Confidence is a great thing and Sean was like Donal Og with his handling and puck outs all night. Sean Coughlan continued to dominate and scored yet another point from play on the 10th minute. Ballinhassig responded with a goal from a 21-yard free from their centre forward. Morgan won the puck out and laid off a great pass fro Sean Coughlan to fire over. Shane Whyte my man if the match scored 1-1 in the next few minutes. His display from the first to last minute was a pleasure to watch. Ballinhassig replied with another point from their centre forward before Zac Hanlon fired over the games last point. The first leg of the double has been achieved.
The footballers travel to Tracton on Monday night to take on the locals in the football championship final. Teddy mc Carthy who himself won the famous All Ireland double with Cork was in attendance ad gave his seal of approval on this team’s display. Passage had beaten Crosshaven and Sliabh Rua in a titanic encounter in the semi-final to reach the final. The future is bright for this team with all 18 players giving a peak performance on yeti biggest occasion of all a championship final. As the song goes Better Days Are Coming.
